| Known as the "Iron Eagle" (Der Eiserne Adler), Vzfw Paul Bäumer served in an infantry regiment before his transfer to the German Air Service. Although he flew a variety of types while in the service, he preferred the maneuverability and agility of the Fokker Dr.1. He was one of only five pilots to be awarded both the Blue Max and the Golden Military Merit Cross. He survived the war with 43 victories to his credit, and following the war, he became a dentist and continued flying. He was killed while performing an aerobatic display in 1927. "Bring It Around" is a depiction of the Fokker Dr.1, serial 204/17, which he flew with Jasta 2 (Boelcke). Because of its lack of a steerable tail skid, the Dr.1 often had to be maneuvered into position by groundcrew. With a man on each wing and one at the tail shouting directions, Bäumer revs his engine and begins to turn his machine into the wind for takeoff. Printed on acid free stock with fade resistant inks, the print is signed by Russell Smith. |
