Saxon Life Guards Officer and
"The Survivors" of the French
heavy cavalry attack on the
Great Redoubt at the Battle of
Borodino in the Napoleonic
Wars.
Saxony's Guard Cavalry Attack Redoubt

It is 2:00 p.m. on September 7th, during the battle of Borodino 1812, and for the past two
hours, the 7th Division of Napoleon's French and Allied Cuirassiers has been standing
under fire from the Russian artillery of the Great Redoubt*. The Saxon Heavy Cavalry
Brigade of that division is eager to come to grips with their tormentors.

Major Friedrich Wilhelm Carl Loeffelholtz von Colberg and his proud Germans of Saxony,
the Gardes du Corps, advance while Oberstleutnant Christian Günther von Selmitz follows
with the Zastrow Cuirassiers. The Gardes du Corps echelon push through the screening
Russian light infantry Jägers and ride up and over the breastworks as Zastrow Cuirassiers
force their way in through the rear of the Redoubt.

Die Überlebenden

Only forty-one officers and approximately five hundred men of the Saxon Heavy Cavalry
Brigade survive to rally around their Standards, but the Great Redoubt has fallen to the
Emperor of France, Napoleon Bonaparte, and his army.

*(Military earth works to protect Russian artillery, also known as the Raevski Redoubt or
Grande Redoubt- made famous in Tolstoy's account of the Battle, featured in his much
read novel "War and Peace")
