| July, 1941. A pair of F2A-2 Brewster Buffaloes of VF-3’s “Felix the Cat” Squadron keeps watch overhead while operating off of Diamondhead. Steaming below, the USS Arizona (BB 39) and USS Saratoga (CV-3) are accompanied by a pair of four-stacker destroyers of the Wickes Class. Although it was the US Navy’s first all metal monowing fighter, the Brewster Buffalo was not a successful design for American pilots. Phased out of naval service just before Pearl Harbor, the type was still exported, notably to Finland where it met with great success against Soviet and German fighters. |
