| In southern Russia, the vast, gently rolling plains of the Ukraine seemed to strech on forever. Many German Aces were made on the Eastern Front, such as Günther Rall, one of the Luftwaffe's top guns. A captain in JG 52, Rall flew Messerschmitt 109's against the best pilots and planes Russia had to offer. He is depicted in this painting climbing into his Me-109 G3, "Black 13", for a sortie over the plains. His "schwarzmen" are standing by to lend a hand and see him on his way. It is late in the summer of 1942 when the Luftwaffe was still enjoying numerous victories. Shortly thereafter, the U.S. became the major contender in the War for Europe, and the Germans had to fight on two fronts against ever increasing numbers of Allied fighters and bombers. Thus ended their " high tide of summer". Günther Rall finished the war with 275 aerial victories, the third highest ranking Ace in history. The painting is signed by General Rall and he has commented on several occasions that he really enjoys this piece of art. |
