This painting was commissioned by DD Video to be presented to the RAF Benevolent
Fund in connection with the launch of the video series War in the Air.
The brief winter sunset paints the windswept Yorkshire airfield with its golden light as
crews of 102 Squadron RAF prepare themselves for another long and dangerous night
over Germany, 1942. A quick last cigarette before boarding their aircraft, not strictly
regulation but who is going to deny these young men their last light?
