The Print...
The Memphis Belle's Asheville Departure" took place on August 14, 1943, when the
crew of the Memphis Belle were on a War Bond tour of the United States after
completing twenty-five combat missions over Europe. Taking off from Asheville North
Carolina, COL Robert Morgan banked the Memphis Belle 60 degrees left wing down
and flew between the Asheville Court House and City Hall! The distance between the
two buildings is 75 feet at their base and the wing span of a B-17 is 103 feet! The B-17
and crew of the Memphis Bell were the first ever to complete their required 25 combat
missions, making them eligible to return home.
