Milwaukee Road
Railroad Artist
Bruce Friesch
The Milwaukee Road, Class S3, Northern were designed and built in 1944
by American Locomotive Company. It is one of 10 locomotives built for
the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad.

The 261 was retired in 1954 and stored at Milwaukee Shops until it was
donated to the National Railroad Museum at Green Bay, Wisconsin. The
locomotive was placed on display there in 1958. In late 1991 the engine
was leased to North Star Rail, Inc. to be restored to full running condition.
The S-3 Class, Northerns were designed for fast freight and express
trains, and regularly pulled passenger trains. They had a top speed of 75
miles an hour.
