Artist Russel Smith's Bio:
Born and raised in North
Augusta, SC, Russell’s love of
drawing was evident at a
young age. As a child he could
usually be found sketching
pictures of Snoopy, Garfield, or
some type of airplane rather
than doing his schoolwork.
Later majoring in art at
Augusta State University,
Russell began studying the
rudiments of drawing and
painting and the aesthetic
concepts involved in
expressing ideas through
images. After graduation he
spent nine years working in
the prepress industry while
creating and selling his
artwork on the side. Finally, in
2001, he realized his dream of
becoming a full time artist.
Over the past few years
Russell has self published
numerous limited and open
edition prints. Although his
images span the entire history
of aviation, it becomes quickly
obvious to those viewing his
work that his main interest is
World War 1 aviation. Focusing
almost entirely on that time
period, he is quickly
establishing himself as one of
the leading World War 1
aviation artists in the world. His
work can be seen in many
collections, both public and
private, around the world and
has been recognized by
several international
publications including Aviation
History, Flight Journal,
Windsock Datafiles, Cross and
Cockade and the Italian
publication JP4. Most recently,
six of Russell's original
paintings were aquired by the
New Zealand Museum of
Aviation to go on permanent
display there when the
museum opens in August of
2005. In addition, Russell’s
work has been included in
many national and
international exhibitions
including the Icarus Art of
Flight Exhibition, the
Simuflite/Flying Magazine
Horizons of Flight Art
Exhibition, and the American
Society of Aviation Artists
Annual Exhibition.
Russell has been the recipient
of several awards and honors
including a Merit Award in 2005
American Society of Aviation
Artist Exhibition and an
Honorable Mention in the
Experimental Aircraft
Association 1999 Art
Exhibition. Russell is also a
member of Cross and Cockade
and the League of World War 1
Aviation Historians, as well as
an Artist Member of the
American Society of Aviation
Artists.
