"The Veteran"

April 1944. Major Dominic (Don) S. Gentile, 336th Sqdn.,
Fourth Fighter Group, Eighth Air Force completes his final
combat sortie. Serving with the famed Eagle Squadron
since 1942, Gentile capped a long and distinguished career
as a combat pilot with 23 air to air victories and 7 air to
ground kills for 30 German aircraft destroyed. Due to the
hazardous nature of attacking ground targets, particularly
with aircraft powered by liquid-cooled engines, the Eighth's
assessment board gave credit for such kills which made
Gentile the 4th's leading ace at the time.
