| April 1944. Major Dominic (Don) S. Gentile, 336th Sqdn., Fourth Fighter Group, Eighth Air Force completes his final combat sortie. Serving with the famed Eagle Squadron since 1942, Gentile capped a long and distinguished career as a combat pilot with 23 air to air victories and 7 air to ground kills for 30 German aircraft destroyed. Due to the hazardous nature of attacking ground targets, particularly with aircraft powered by liquid-cooled engines, the Eighth's assessment board gave credit for such kills which made Gentile the 4th's leading ace at the time. |
