"Thunder in Weber Canyon"
Open Edition of 500 hand-signed
lithographs (16" x 20")

The original is privately owned and
displayed in San Diego, California.
$30.00
Union Pacific 3985, an Alco built 4-6-6-4 Challenger
(specifications) articulated steam locomotive, heads eastbound
out of Ogden, Utah, and up the 1.14% ruling grade to the summit
at Wahsatch, a distance of 65 miles. Seen here in the heart of
Weber Canyon (source photo), the 3985 is about to meet 3977
and 3980, two 4-6-6-4 Challengers (source photo) pulling a
westbound empty train of Pacific Fruit Express reefer cars down
the original main line built in 1869, which has a 1.72% ruling
grade. This westbound train will be interchanged with the
Southern Pacific Railroad in Ogden, which will transfer it west to
California and the farmlands of the San Joaquin Valley. With a
4-8-8-4 Big Boy helper pushing on the rear of the train, UP 3985
works on the second main line built in 1916, next to the Weber
River. With a new fireman learning how to fire the locomotive, a
seasoned veteran of the Challenger takes a few moments to
enjoy the scenery.
