| July, 1944, France. James Edgar "Johnnie" Johnson, Wing Commander of 144 Squadron, RCAF, shoots down a Focke-Wulfe 190 in support of the Normandy breakout. Piloting the Supermarine Spitfire Mk IXc armed with four .303 caliber machine guns and a pair of Hispano 20mm cannon, Johnson went on to become the highest scoring combat aviator of the RAF with 38 victories claimed. All of his kills were fighters. At the time of his retirement in 1965, Johnson had achieved the rank of Air Vice Marshall. |
